What is a Penicillium notatum?

 

Penicillium notatum is a fungus that is the source of the compound penicillin which became the wonderdrug back then. It was discovered by Alexander Fleming when he was about to throw away his petridish that got contaminated with the said fungus. He realized that the colony of bacteria did not touch the area where the fungus had grown. And thereafter after conducting several more experiments about the fungus and isolating the compound responsible for the inhibition, the antibiotic penicillin was born.
